Japan – Argentina-Increasing Groundings in the Parana River

Rising groundings in the Paraná River: a clear operational warning.

In 2024, 21 groundings were recorded along the Paraná River, exceeding historical averages.
According to the Japan P&I Club, most incidents still stem from navigational errors, often driven by a critical gap:
➡️ misalignment between shipboard ECDIS and Pilot navigation systems.

With waterway management still in transition, prevention relies on disciplined fundamentals:

  • structured Master–Pilot passage plan discussions
  • verification of updated channels and routes
  • heightened awareness of new river stretches with harder bottoms (e.g. Fighiera)

📌 Even when hull damage is limited, the operational, financial and administrative exposure can be significant.
