Container slot shortages have led some bulk operators to consider carrying containers in holds or above deck. The London P&I Club is clear: bulk carriers are generally not designed for container carriage.
Lack of lashing points, tank-top limitations, hatch cover loading and weathertight integrity create material risks. Without a CSS Code–compliant stowage and lashing plan, verified structural assessments and early Class involvement, seaworthiness under the Hague-Visby Rules may be challenged—undermining claim defensibility.
