GARD – Beware of backflush filter failures – a cause of engine damage

When a protection system becomes a critical failure point.

Automatic backflush filters are widely used to protect engines by keeping fuel and lubricating oil clean.
Gard’s recent claims experience shows, however, that when filter candles deteriorate, they may cause severe and sudden engine damage.

Disintegrating wire mesh can pass undetected into the lubrication system, damaging bearings, camshafts and crankshafts — often without prior warning signs.
In some cases, reduced differential pressure may even conceal the problem rather than reveal it.

The takeaway is straightforward:
✔ proper maintenance
✔ trained engine crews
✔ monitoring of rinsing cycles
are essential risk-prevention measures — technically and contractually.
