AIS can be a silent trap.
The latest StopLoss edition from the London P&I Club highlights a growing concern: technology is enhancing navigation — but also eroding fundamental seamanship.
Recent collisions in restricted visibility, failures within TSS crossings, and a disturbing number of “zero near misses” all tell the same story:
👉 crews increasingly rely on AIS and GPS alone, neglecting radar, lookout and multi-source position verification.
Inspection trends reinforce this picture:
• GPS-only position fixing
• weak passage plan intervals
• missing drain plugs in savealls
• unattended hydraulic leaks
• corroded container deck fittings
These are not exotic failures — they are everyday weaknesses that escalate into costly incidents.
