Britannia – Bulk Soya Bean Carriage: risks, claims and loss prevention

Bulk soya bean carriage is a cornerstone of global agricultural trade, yet it remains one of the most claim-prone cargoes in maritime transport. Britannia P&I’s recent insight highlights how biological characteristics, long-haul voyages and differing quality standards converge to create significant risk exposure.

A biologically sensitive cargo

Soya beans are inherently heterogeneous. Cargoes are assembled from multiple silos and origins, each with varying moisture content, temperature and storage history. These factors promote microbial activity, which generates heat and can trigger a self-heating cycle leading to caking, mould growth and, in extreme cases, fire risk.

Long voyages and mismatched standards

Routes from South America to China often exceed 30–40 days. Extended transit through warm climates increases the likelihood of instability. Compounding this, beans certified under Brazilian standards may fail to meet Chinese criteria, particularly regarding moisture limits and the definition of heat-damaged beans. Claims frequently extend beyond the physical condition of the cargo to the performance of processed products such as oil and meal.

The Italian claims landscape

Italy has also seen a rise in disputes involving “hot” soya beans at discharge. Many claims focus on operational consequences, including additional cargo shifting and storage costs. Crucially, elevated temperature alone does not automatically indicate damage; objective evidence and proper documentation are decisive.

Prevention through discipline

Effective loss prevention relies on:

  • meticulous hold preparation and hatch cover integrity;
  • continuous monitoring of cargo temperature and ventilation;
  • comprehensive documentation throughout the voyage.

These practices not only mitigate operational risk but also strengthen the carrier’s defensive position in the event of a claim.
